Canberra has finally put on some warm weather for a good solid week. Spring has sprung! Only a month and a half late… But a nice sunny weekend is the perfect time to start the spring cleaning, which for us this weekend meant hiring a steam cleaner and cleaning all the carpet in the house, which covers everything bar the kitchen and laundry. We even had carpet in our bathroom and toilet until recently when we both got so sick of it we just ripped it out, now we have cement on the bathroom floor until we get the tiles re-done.
Anyone who has house trained a puppy and who also has carpet, will know what I mean when I say I don’t want to show you the “before” photos. Especially on a mid colour carpet (an awful pinky peach colour, blergh) where an innocent little pee stain can turn into a very ugly brown mark… So! Needless to say it was definitely time to get them done again. And they have come up beautifully (except the colour remains, of course). Though an odd thing happened last time, about 2 weeks after we had cleaned them some of the stains came back again. Two whole weeks! Can anyone explain why/how that happens?
I definitely recommend hiring the commercial steam cleaner to DIY (we did our through Woolies), it only costs $32 for 4 hours, and it’s extremely satisfying. I mentioned to John today that hanging the washing out is my most hated chore, and I think it’s because there’s no instant gratification. I don’t mind vacuuming or sweeping or clearing dishes, because you can see the results right away, but hanging washing is so tedious, and you have to wait ages for the air to do it’s thing, and then the clothes don’t actually look very different at the end of it. So I said I quit that chore for today and he hung the rest out haha.
Back to the steam cleaner… It’s quite easy to use, but you have to spend a while filling the reservoir up with boiled water. The hot sudsy water goes down the wand through one tube, then it has a super vacuum that sucks everything back up into it through another tube. The awesome/gross thing about it is that when you empty the waste reservoir, you can see how disgusting the carpets were, but now you have the satisfaction of knowing how clean they are! Dog fur is the major thing, I vacuumed the whole house really thoroughly before hiring the machine and there was still loads of dog fur in the waste reservoir.
Oh Gosh. I think we need to do the carpets more often =[ Which is a good argument for getting it all ripped up and our polished floorboards done sooner! Here’s hoping =)
Oh lawd I’m getting bored writing this post, I imagine it’s not very thrilling reading it! The point is: YAY MY CARPETS ARE NICE AND CLEAN, and now if I could just get the dogs to stop farting, the house will be lovely to look at and also breathe in!
