I’ve had a plan to make a quilt for a while now, and have even drawn up a design, but instead of just going ahead and making it without any knowledge of actually how to (like I do in a lot of projects), I attended my first quilting workshop at Hobby Sew in Belconnen today. I had a lot of fun! It’s very satisfying, relaxing and quite therapeutic, doing such a solo activity but with guidance and company.
This class we covered the basics of patchwork, getting all the pieces lined up and sewn together. I’ll be registering for the next class which covers putting the layers together and binding them, and starting to quilt it.
As part of the class everyone got a kit which contained all the pre-cut fabric pieces and some thread. The other 4 ladies chose what I would call typical nanna quilt fabrics (nothing wrong with that, just a bit beige for my personal tastes), whilst I chose the brightest possible kit. All throughout the workshop they were commenting how lovely my pieces were =)

I’ve only finished 2 of 6 rows, but I’m really looking forward to finishing off the patchwork and going to the next class to learn how to put the rest of it all together! It’s actually been a lot easier than I thought it would be (but this is a simple pattern).

Has anyone else made a quilt of their own?

I love this! Do all sewing shops do this kind of thing? Because I’d love to go along and learn!
Can’t wait to see it when you’ve finished!

I’m not really sure, but I think a lot of them do… Any shop you go into, just check if there’s a big table set up somewhere and that probably means they do classes/workshops. I definitely recommend it, it was loads of fun =)
