Because JA’s family is American, every year we have a big thanksgiving dinner at his mom’s house. For Aussies out there who don’t know what it’s about, it’s basically a celebration of the Native American’s saving the pilgrims from starvation by teaching them how to grow stuff to eat. So it’s like Christmas, with heaps of food and yummy goodness, just without the presents. Some people go around the table and say what they’re thankful for (which is a nice idea) but JA’s family isn’t in to that, so we just eat lots. It is always held on the last Thursday in November, but we usually have the dinner the Saturday following that.

We also had a mini “tacosgiving” on the Friday with Frank, JA’s dad and his sister Katie, which was nice =)
This year at his mom’s we had Susan and Nick (JA’s mom and stepdad), JA’s sisters Katie and Erin, Sam (Erin’s boyfriend), “Mark-and-the-kids” (Nick’s son and his kids Tom and Maddy), my mum (dad was away), me & JA. And a new kitten (yet to be named)! Erin and Sam picked out a kitten from a litter up in Newcastle and brought it down on behalf of Susan to give to Nick, as his old himalayan Molly passed away earlier this year. The kitty is so cute!

The highlight of everyone’s thanksgiving’s is definitely the pumpkin pies. Frank and Susan both make a mean pumpkin pie, though I have to admit I’m actually not that much of a fan… I am totally the odd one out there, everyone else goes nuts for them!

All in all it’s a really nice holiday to celebrate, it’s time with the family, lots of yummy food, and no commercialised crap like at Christmas time. I’m looking forward to many more Thanksgivings =)
Do you celebrate thanksgiving? Who with?
